Pretty Deadly #4
Pretty Deadly #4 from Image Comics continues this moody 2014 Western with a cover by Emma Ríos that's equal parts languid and unsettling — a red-haired figure in a vest sits casually on wooden steps, pistol raised, while a black crow stands reflected in a puddle below and a top hat rests nearby on a post. The muted, sun-bleached palette by Jordie Bellaire gives the scene a hazy, dreamlike tension that feels perfectly suited to Kelly Sue DeConnick's mythic frontier storytelling. If you've been following this series, issue #4 promises more of the haunting atmosphere that makes Pretty Deadly one of 2014's most visually distinctive books.
