Power Rangers Prime #3
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freePower Rangers Prime #3 is the pivotal turning point of Boom! Studios' rebooted Power Rangers continuity: it delivers the first full morphing sequence of the entire Prime era, as Lauren Shiba transforms into the Prime Red Ranger after Rita Repulsa forges a brand-new Tyrannosaurus Power Coin from ancient museum relics and Morphin Grid energy. The issue is the structural hinge of the series — the moment the series shifts from world-building into active superhero storytelling, establishing a genuinely unprecedented dynamic where franchise villain Rita Repulsa acts as the architect and mentor of a new Ranger team rather than their enemy. It also marks the first time the VR Troopers from the 1990s Saban franchise appear as recurring antagonists in a mainstream Power Rangers comic continuity, repositioned as Eltarian-aligned law enforcers. The issue sold out at the distributor level and received a second printing, reflecting strong early reader enthusiasm for the rebooted direction.

Power Rangers Prime launched in November 2024 as Boom! Studios' complete reboot of its Power Rangers comic universe — a continuity that had run uninterrupted since 2016 and concluded with writer Melissa Flores' own 'Recharged/Darkest Hour' crossover event. Flores, a former Director of Power Rangers Development and Production at the television franchise, was retained as the writer to shepherd the new universe, joined by Beijing-based artist Michael Yg (Iron Fist), colorist Fabi Marques, and letterer Ed Dukeshire, with character and cover design by Dan Mora. The series was announced publicly on August 22, 2024, drawing explicit comparisons in its solicitation copy to Marvel's Ultimate Comics line as a bold franchise reimagining. Issue #3, released January 22, 2025, was the first issue of the ongoing series to ship in the new calendar year and the first to warrant a second printing, with a new cover by artist Jahnoy Lindsay.
Trivia · 7 facts
- First appearance of the Prime Red Ranger: Lauren Shiba (formerly the Red Samurai Ranger from Power Rangers Samurai) is transformed into the Prime Red Ranger by Rita Repulsa in the final pages of this issue.
- The new Tyrannosaurus Power Coin is created on-panel by Rita Repulsa using her Magic Wand, her connection to the Morphin Grid, and a dinosaur bone fragment/relic from the Angel Grove Natural History Museum.
- This is the first issue of the Power Rangers Prime series in which any character morphs into a full Ranger — the first two issues were dedicated entirely to world-building and cast establishment.
- The VR Troopers (Ryan Steele, J.B. Reese, and Kaitlin Star) appear in their full Trooper forms and are positioned as antagonists — agents of the Eltarian Earth Security Taskforce — marking their first active combat role in Boom! Studios' Power Rangers comics.
- The story inverts classic franchise mythology: on this alternate Earth, the Eltarians (Zordon's people) are the colonizing authoritarian rulers, Power Rangers are outlawed, and Rita Repulsa is the one recruiting and empowering a new Ranger team.
- Creative team: written by Melissa Flores; art by Michael Yg; colors by Fabi Marques; letters by Ed Dukeshire; edited by Allyson Gronowitz. Main cover by Dan Mora; variants by Danny Earls, Jão Canola, Bon Bernardo, Doaly, InHyuk Lee, Sweeney Boo, and Dustin Nguyen.
- The issue sold out at the distributor level and received a second printing featuring a new cover by Jahnoy Lindsay (Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow) — the only issue in the initial run confirmed to have gone to a second printing this early in the series.
