On Christmas Eve while Eva is thinking of her fiance, Ron is shot while on guard duty in a far flung corner of a fading British empire. The army flies her to see Ron, but complications set in and he dies before she can see him. The officer escorting her sees the state she is in and wants to help. He lies about being Ron's childhood friend to get Eva to allow him to stay with her.
