Determined to prove himself, he travels to NASA to pitch his invention as a way to rescue the missing astronauts Taylor, Dodge, Landon, and Stewart—only to be dismissed. Undeterred, he returns home and activates the machine, vanishing into the distant future.
In "Chapter 2: Arrival" from Planet of the Apes #31, Derek stumbles into a future where apes rule and humans are hunted. After his time machine crashes, he witnesses a brutal encounter with a warlike ape faction led by the scarred Gorodon, who seize his gear. Forced to flee, Derek slips into the shadows and tracks the apes back to their hidden city, where the true scale of their dominance begins to unfold.
