Mavis accepts a job as companion-nurse for Mrs. Grant as she and her daughter sail from England to China. On the way, Mrs. Grant tries to arrange a romance between her daughter and Malcolm, who has just inherited the great Yun Tang estate. But Nora has already fallen for a doctor in China and Malcolm is more interested in Mavis. With Malcolm's recommendation, Mavis gets a job at a hospital in Shanghai. When a cholera epidemic breaks out up country, Mavis volunteers to go help despite Malcolm's warnings about the danger. When she arrives she meets Nora's doctor friend.
