“It Could Have Been Anyone”

This November 1977 Archie Series gem captures Reggie in a wonderfully self-skewering moment — a moving man accidentally tips a large mirror toward him, and Reggie can't help admiring his own reflection even mid-chaos, while Veronica looks on and pointedly tells him people say he's "the most conceited boy in town." The sunny beach scene crowded with the Riverdale gang across the top of the cover sets a cheerful summer backdrop, with a dropped tennis racket adding to the perfectly timed comic disorder below. Writer-artist Dick Malmgren, inked by Jon D'Agostino with colors by Ginny Sykora and lettering by Bill Yoshida, delivers a cover that tells its own complete, funny little story before you even open the book.
