“Cut Down to Size”

From the January 1974 pages of Archie's long-running anthology comes Pep #285, and the cover — penciled by Dan DeCarlo and inked by Rudy Lapick — captures the cheerful chaos of Riverdale High School perfectly. A stylish pair of identical twins in matching "HI!" sweaters and plaid bell-bottoms have stopped Archie and a pal dead in their tracks, with speech bubbles declaring "Dig the new twins in school!" and "Now that's what I call unfair competition!" The whole Riverdale gang peers down from the masthead above, making this a warm, energetic snapshot of early-'70s teen comedy at its most fun.
