“The Last Straw”

Outside Riverdale High, Veronica and Betty are turning heads in their fashionable long skirts — much to the visible dismay of the boys watching from the sidewalk, including Archie and Jughead. The cover gag lands perfectly in a speech bubble exchange: one adult marvels at the girls' new look while another deadpans that the boys are all wearing "long faces," capturing that breezy Archie humor at its best. Dan DeCarlo and Joe Edwards deliver a wonderfully lively street scene, with the whole Riverdale gang represented in the title banner above, making Pep #250 a cheerful snapshot of early-'70s teen culture.
