“Ten Miles High”

In "Ten Miles High," the Panther takes on a mission that stretches beyond the jungle and into the unknown, as a series of mysterious rocket explosions over the wilderness leave both military and scientific minds baffled. When a crashed flying machine is found near the jungle, the Panther—guided by the Colonel and Dr. Vell—volunteers to pilot a jet into the sky to track the next launch, determined to uncover what’s going wrong at ten miles high. Written, drawn, and inked by Paul Wheelahan, this 1958 adventure blends Cold War-era sci-fi intrigue with the jungle hero’s trademark resolve, all rendered in the creator’s distinctive style. The cover, also by Wheelahan, captures the moment of launch with a dramatic, dynamic flair.

Base commander Colonel Nader and scientist Dr. Vell look on as a rocket is launched into space. However, as soon as it reaches a certain altitude it appears to explode, and plummets to earth. Not the first time this has happened, and its cause is a mystery. The next day jungle native Maku reports to the Panther that a flying machine has crashed nearby. Surveying the wreckage he realizes it's a rocket, not a plane, that has fallen. After meeting with the Colonel and Dr. Vell, the Panther volunteers to fly a jet to follow the next rocket into the sky so as to observe up close its trajectory.
