"The Gun and the Pen—Trail of the Outlaw" follows Tex Farrell, a bronc-busting outlaw competing in contests and riding a horse named Cyclone. When an angry group of farmers forms a vigilante committee to burn out ranchers they suspect of rustling cattle, Clint Barstow and his men try to stop them, but Dirty Nester incites violence against the cattlemen. Jed Barton arrives to help Barstow, and after a confrontation at a water tower, Barton pursues Wilkes and Nester into the desert, intending to burn down the Last Water station to prevent them from being followed.
