Origin II #2

History

The five-issue Origin II limited series was written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Adam Kubert — the latter the brother of Andy Kubert, who illustrated the original 2001 Origin mini-series — and was edited under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso with Jeanine Schaefer as series editor. The project served as a direct sequel to the 2001 Origin series (by Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins, and Andy Kubert), picking up the story of James Howlett a few years later in 1907. The full series was collected in a hardcover and a trade paperback, both titled Wolverine: Origin II, published in 2014; it was later also collected alongside the original Origin #1–6 in the omnibus Wolverine: Origin: The Complete Collection.

• First appearance of Clara Creed (Earth-616): mutant animal handler, daughter of Zebediah and Victoria Creed, and previously unknown sister of Victor Creed (Sabretooth) and Saul Creed; created by Kieron Gillen and Adam Kubert.
• First appearance of Saul Creed (Earth-616): tracker working for circus ringmaster Hugo Haversham, and brother of Sabretooth; his surname and full Creed-family connection were deliberately withheld until Origin II #5.
• First full appearance of Hugo the Great (Hugo Haversham, Earth-616): Canadian circus ringmaster who seeks to capture Logan as 'The Clawed Man of the Woods' for his traveling show.
• The issue delivers Nathaniel Essex's first active, speaking appearance in the series (he appeared only behind-the-scenes in #1), showing him ordering the death of a loose-lipped tracker and deploying poison gas to flush Logan out of the Canadian wilderness.
• Story is set in Canada, 1907 — several years after the events of the original Origin mini-series — placing it squarely in the pre-Weapon X, pre-WWI chapter of Logan's life.
• The issue ends with Logan captured by Hugo's circus troupe (Clara and Saul included) and publicly exhibited in a cage as Hugo's headline attraction.
