At Caistor Castle in Norfolk—one of England's most haunted fortresses—a sinister omen precedes every death among its residents: the appearance of a phantom coach driven by a headless coachman, who races through the castle gates to point at his next victim. A resident of the castle witnesses the impossible apparition and must grapple with the horrifying knowledge of what's to come.

Set in 1573, this tale follows Peter van der Mey, a Dutch carpenter defending the besieged town of Alkmaar against Spanish forces under General Alva—who's determined to starve the town into submission. When the defenders face an impossible choice between flooding the countryside or surrendering, van der Mey devises a cunning plan to infiltrate the Spanish camp and plant false orders that could change the course of the siege. It's a sharp reminder that sometimes a quick mind and courage matter more than weapons or armies.
