About this Issue

Issue #3 of One World Under Doom serves as the narrative pivot of Marvel's sweeping 2025 'Dark Reign'-scale event, delivering the event's single most consequential revelation: that Doctor Doom seized control of every world government not through sorcery or mind-control, but through straightforward negotiation — offering each leader whatever they personally desired in exchange for their support. That disclosure, surfaced by Scarlet Witch, Baron Mordo, and Madelyne Pryor during a covert mindscape probe, reframes the entire moral and political architecture of the event by confirming that Doom's takeover was a reflection of human nature rather than supernatural coercion. Equally significant is the issue's closing cliffhanger, in which Dormammu recognizes that Doom's preoccupation with earthly governance has left the magical wards protecting Earth from the Dark Dimension dangerously unmaintained — escalating the stakes from a geo-political power struggle into a full cosmic threat. The issue also stages the first sustained team-up of Avengers and Masters of Evil within this era, a structurally unusual alliance that would drive the remainder of the nine-issue series.

History

One World Under Doom was conceived around 2023, when editor Tom Brevoort and writer Ryan North began seeding the premise inside North's concurrent Fantastic Four run — a deliberate continuity hand-off from one ongoing title to a crossover event. The direct springboard was 2024's Blood Hunt, in which Doctor Strange reluctantly transferred the Sorcerer Supreme mantle to Doom to end a vampire-driven global crisis; North has publicly described Brevoort's pitch as planting 'the seed of the next story in the current story.' Marvel positioned the nine-issue series — with North writing and Brazilian artist R.B. Silva penciling and inking every chapter — as the company's largest status-quo disruption since 2008's Dark Reign, and timed its release window to coincide with the theatrical debut of Avengers: Doomsday. Issue #3, solicited with a Final Order Cutoff of March 24, 2025, arrived in comic shops on April 23, 2025, with colors by David Curiel, letters by VC's Travis Lanham, a main cover by Ben Harvey, and variant covers by Gabriele Dell'Otto (standard and virgin editions), Phil Noto (1:25 ratio), Chris Giarrusso (wraparound connecting and blue-line sketch versions), R.B. Silva, and a 'Doomasaur' specialty cover; a second-printing connecting variant was also produced.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Ryan North with interior art by R.B. Silva, colors by David Curiel, and letters by VC's Travis Lanham; Tom Brevoort served as editor.
  • Published April 23, 2025 as part three of a nine-issue limited series representing Marvel's self-described biggest status-quo shift since Dark Reign (2008).
  • The issue's central dramatic reveal is that Doom never mind-controlled world leaders — he personally negotiated with each one, exploiting post-Blood Hunt global anxiety to offer them individually tailored rewards (wealth, security, impunity, etc.) in exchange for their allegiance.
  • Captain Marvel devises and leads a two-pronged strategy: the Avengers and an assembled group of supervillains — Doctor Octopus, M.O.D.O.K., Mysterio, Arcade, Goblin Queen (Madelyne Pryor), and Baron Mordo — attack Doom in Latveria as a distraction while Scarlet Witch, Baron Mordo, and Madelyne Pryor psychically enter the mindscape of world leaders to learn the truth of his takeover.
  • The issue establishes a temporary, uneasy Avengers/Masters of Evil alliance, with Carol Danvers characterizing the villains as 'wildcards' useful for generating chaos against a foe the heroes cannot beat in a straightforward fight.
  • The closing cliffhanger introduces Dormammu as the event's next major threat: observing from the Dark Dimension, he perceives that Doom's neglect of the Sorcerer Supreme's protective wards has left Earth's dimensional barriers vulnerable, and begins planning an invasion.
  • Also revealed in the issue: the alternate-universe 'Dinosaur Doctor Doom' (Doom's tyrannosaur-riding counterpart from a world where dinosaurs never went extinct, introduced earlier in North's run) is shown to be under Emperor Doom's direct control.
  • Variant covers were produced by Gabriele Dell'Otto (standard and virgin), Phil Noto (1:25 ratio), Chris Giarrusso (wraparound connecting and 1:50 blue-line sketch), R.B. Silva, and a 'Doomasaur' specialty cover; a second-printing connecting variant was also issued.
