Un anziano maggiordomo racconta la drammatica vicenda della famiglia del conte Bertrand. Al centro della storia c'è Gaston, il figlio del conte, incapace di superare il dolore per la perdita della sua vera madre. Questo tormento lo spinge a covare un profondo rancore verso la sua nuova famiglia, portandolo a compiere una torbida vendetta che segnerà il destino di tutti, compreso il suo.
