Chapter five of Otis Frampton's Oddly Normal opens on a quietly heartbreaking image: the young protagonist huddled alone behind thick bamboo bars, knees drawn to her chest, her expression weary and resigned. The warm golden light pooling around her only deepens the sense of isolation, making this 2015 Image series feel every bit as emotionally resonant as it is charmingly stylized. Frampton's expressive linework does a lot with very little, and this cover alone is enough to make you want to know how she got there — and how she plans to get out.
