Northlanders #39
Brian Wood and Simon Gane bring their "Siege of Paris" arc to a close with this visceral Vertigo installment, and Massimo Carnevale's cover leaves little doubt about the toll the fighting has taken — a bloodied warrior kneels in shallow water, clutching a dagger in one hand and raising what appears to be a spear or staff with the other, while a second battered figure slumps against a stone wall in the background. It's a raw, painfully human image that captures the grim cost of Viking-age conflict with striking realism. If you've been following this arc through Northlanders, issue #39 promises a conclusion as unsparing as the world Wood has built around it.
