Three hunters—Thornton Wells, Edgar Jason, and John Richards—encounter something inexplicable in West Virginia's Ragged Mountains on the night of August 16, 1973: a creature that shrugs off rifle fire, kills with terrifying strength, and displays an intelligence that defies explanation. As the survivors struggle to escape and make sense of what attacked them, the true horror becomes less about the monster in the hills and more about who will believe their story—or whether anyone can.
