One story depicts Sergeant Vernon Presnell fearlessly crawling toward enemy bunkers during combat, destroying an enemy emplacement and capturing Chinese soldiers before being sent home; he is posthumously awarded his second Bronze Star and Purple Heart after dying in an accident near Fort Riley, Kansas. Another story follows Sergeant Robert J. Lynch, who summons reserve strength to reach his withdrawing company during a German tank assault, helps hold fire against the advancing tanks, and is awarded his second Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his heroism. A third story involves a plane crash and rescue on Long Island Sound, where a young man named Steven Fuchs is saved from a burning boat and later helps rescue another accident victim from the water before a low-flying plane stalls and crashes into the sea.
