New Gods #3

The cover of this April 1989 DC "New Format" issue says it all with its bold "Bug Out!" tagline — a bare-chested, long-haired warrior hurls himself forward through a debris-strewn battlefield alongside a red-and-yellow armored figure and a young redheaded hero in crimson, while a snarling green energy being looms ominously in the background. Cover pencils by Paris Cullins and inks by P. Craig Russell give the scene a kinetic, almost breathless energy that pulls you right into the chaos. With Starlin, Cullins, and Lewis handling the interior, New Gods #3 looks like exactly the kind of cosmic action DC was doing so well in the late '80s.
