The cover of this August 1996 issue makes the stakes immediately clear: Superman himself is locked in a tense mid-air confrontation with S'ivaa — an enormous, roaring, stone-like colossus bristling with jagged spikes and golden chains — while a smaller red figure tumbles helplessly in the chaos below. The tagline "Destroyer of Worlds" leaves little doubt about what kind of threat the New Gods are facing this month. With Rachel Pollack scripting and Stefano Raffaele bringing the cosmic scale to life both inside and on the cover, "Sacrifice of the Gods" promises a clash of mythic proportions.
