During the morning of the 25th, the U.S. Seventh Fleet launches early missions to guard escort carriers as they prepare to face Japanese forces. The small American naval force must defend against a larger Japanese invasion force approaching from the Surigao Strait, where battleships block the strait's mouth and Japanese ships move to attack the American task force at right angles to their course. American gunners open fire from their flagship, with one Japanese destroyer managing to escape the devastating barrage from the American battleships before the Japanese fleet is repelled.
