In "Purpose!", Namor, believed dead, rises from the depths onto a remote island, his mind unhinged. Meanwhile, in New York, the ambitious siblings Desmond and Phoebe Marrs plot to seize control of the newly formed Oracle, Inc., a company built by a mysterious father-daughter duo. Written and illustrated by John Byrne, with inks by Bob Wiacek, colors by Glynis Oliver, and letters by Ken Lopez, the cover by Byrne captures the moment of Namor’s return in striking detail.

According to Byrne's own account, a Namor series was one of the first projects pitched to him upon returning to Marvel after his late-1980s stint at DC, but the idea was set aside while he completed runs on Sensational She-Hulk and West Coast Avengers. When the project finally moved forward, Byrne served as writer, penciler, and cover artist on the debut issue, with Bob Wiacek on inks, Glynis Oliver on colors, Ken Lopez on letters, and Terry Kavanagh as editor under Editor-in-Chief Tom DeFalco. Notably, the series title logo foregrounded the name 'Namor' rather than the traditional 'Sub-Mariner' epithet — a deliberate branding shift that signaled Byrne's intent to reposition the character for a new decade.
