Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds #39
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis anthology issue contains two science fiction stories. "The Night the Masks Were Real" depicts armed explorers on an alien planet encountering mysterious masked beings and investigating their true nature through combat. "The Enemy" is set on a far planet in the year 2163 where life exists in another dimension; the story follows spaceman Tag, who is recruited into a military space force and given an interstellar drive, only to malfunction during his first mission and crash in a meteor storm, stranding him far from his intended destination.
During New Orleans' Mardi Gras festivities, Lieutenant Pete Lebeau discovers that some of the revelers wearing masks are anything but human—they're alien invaders using the chaos of the holiday to conceal their takeover of the city's communications infrastructure. As Eva, a reporter for the Cajun Times, follows the action, Lebeau must rally the citizens and military to expose and stop the two-headed creatures before their reinforcements arrive and consolidate control.
When Captain Guy Holmes lands on a seemingly barren alien planet, he's confident he's found humanity's future colony—until another Government Planetary Exploration spaceman arrives in his area. What begins as a territorial dispute quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, but Holmes soon discovers something deeply unsettling about his mysterious opponent. The inhabitants of this world, invisible to human eyes and communicating only through thought waves, have orchestrated a chilling test to determine whether mankind is truly ready for the stars.
In the year 2163, a revolutionary named Mel Kovan broadcasts a message of defiance against the Council and Prime Brother Mathis, who rule the human colonies across the galaxy with an iron fist. Hunted through the streets of Mars City and betrayed by those he trusted, Kovan makes a desperate push toward the communications building to spread his call for freedom—only to discover that his personal struggle is part of a much larger, coordinated effort already underway. This tale of resistance, hidden allies, and the seeds of galactic uprising asks whether a single voice for freedom can ignite the spark of human liberation.
Tag Grant's experimental deep-space voyage ends in disaster when his ship is crippled by a meteor storm, forcing him to crash-land on a remote, unexplored planet—but as he waits alone through the years for a rescue that seems impossible, he builds a solitary life of peace and self-sufficiency. When rescuers finally arrive to bring him home, Tag must confront a difficult truth about what he's truly been searching for all along.
