Unemployed shopgirl Martha inherits a castle in England. She is courted by neighbor Michael, then falls in love with filmmaker Vincent. Knocked out in an auto accident, Martha imagines she is back in 1673 as her own ancestor, where she meets earlier versions of Michael and Vincent. 1673 Vincent is a fortune-hunter who is defeated by Michael in a duel. When Martha awakes, she tells Vincent she has no money and he dumps her. She notices an old painting has changed to show her ancestor with Michael, next to a fallen Vincent. Martha will marry Michael.
