Helpless female Ellen Chambers over comes her fears to win the heart of Doctor Paul Stacy. As a teen, Ellen discovers acting “helpless” attracts boys. She continues this as an adult, “this is the way nature intended...girls should be dependent on capable, clever men.” Ellen and doctor Paul fall in love, but he doesn’t appreciate her act: “don’t you believe in facing any sort of grown-up responsibilities?” They break up. When a dam breaks and Paul and his nurse Joan are endangered while trying to rescue others, Ellen takes her father’s boat and rescues them. Paul and Ellen reconcile.
