Dress shop clerk Gloria “borrows” an expensive gown to have dinner at a fancy restaurant, where she meets Bill. Gloria hides her working-class origins and agrees to meet Bill the next night, which requires getting another dress from the shop. They spend the evening together but Gloria’s dress gets ripped; she takes it to a tailor for repairs. The next night, Bill confesses he’s a low-paid law clerk and is afraid she’s too rich for him. Gloria explains the truth, and fears she’ll lose her job for borrowing the gown. Everything works out, and she and Bill can just be themselves from now on.
