“I Was Whistle Bait!”

In "I Was Whistle Bait!", Loretta’s life takes a sharp turn when her childhood love, Charlie, disappears from her life just as she makes a desperate vow to escape poverty. Gene Colan’s expressive art brings raw emotion to this poignant tale of class, regret, and the quiet ache of second chances, as Loretta confronts the cost of her choices and the truth behind a lie told to set her free.

Loretta and Charlie are childhood sweethearts. Loretta vows to do “anything” get out of poverty. She meets wealthy Arnold and they marry; Charlie claims he also has a rich fiancee. Loretta discovers Arnold can’t break his “playboy” ways and is unfaithful to her. Visiting her old neighborhood, Loretta meets Charlie, still poor – he lied about his rich girlfriend to set Loretta free. He tells Loretta they can’t be together even though they’re still in love, because she’s accustomed to her new lifestyle and couldn't stand returning to live in the slums. Loretta drives away alone.
