“Weekend Wife”

In "Weekend Wife," Dedee, fed up with her parents' push to marry her steady suitor Dick, takes a bold step by getting a job and dating her co-worker Ross. When a jewelry store is robbed during a night out, Ross is briefly alone with Dedee at a nightclub—just long enough for the crime to occur. Though she has no proof, Dedee stands by Ross, giving him an alibi despite his absence. But when she and Dick conspire to trap Ross, the situation takes a turn that leaves her with a quiet, unexpected realization. The story, illustrated with sharp, expressive detail by Ken Battefield, captures a moment of personal reckoning in a 1950s world where love and independence clash.

Irritated that her parents are pressuring her to marry longtime suitor Dick, Dedee declares her independence and gets a job. She dates co-worker Ross, who takes her to a nightclub and leaves her alone there for half a hour. Dedee discovers a jewelry store was robbed in that time period, but she gives Ross an alibi despite his absence. However, she and Dick arrange to trick Ross and he’s arrested by the police for the robbery. Dedee says “I’ll never want my own way again, darling” and will marry Dick at last.
