In "A Noite do Deus Negro," Conan returns to his homeland of Cimmeria only to find his childhood love, Mala, taken by Vanir raiders. Pursuing them by sea, he stumbles upon a ship littered with the corpses of Vanir and Picts, beside a dark idol that he takes with him. His journey leads him to the Isle of Swords, where Mala is set to be wed to Thorfel the Fair—only for her to take her own life rather than submit. Conan slays Thorfel, then finds unexpected aid from a band of Picts who have come to reclaim their lost idol.
