“Something New Part One”
★ 1st appearance — Malik Khan
About this Issue

Ms. Marvel (Vol. 4) #29 is the first appearance of Malik Khan — Kamala's newborn nephew, the son of her brother Aamir and sister-in-law Tyesha — a character who subsequently recurs across Kamala's comics adventures and represents one of the series' most grounded, humanizing story beats: a superhero pausing her world-saving duties to witness new life enter her own family. The issue also marks the first time Kaylee Kirk is identified by name, setting up the revelation in the very next issue that she is in fact the returned cybervillain Doc.X wearing a human face, threading a tight continuity across G. Willow Wilson's final stretch on the title. Taken together, these two debuts encapsulate what made Wilson's run distinctive — the domestic and the fantastical given equal narrative weight — making this issue a meaningful capstone moment in one of Marvel's most culturally significant runs of the 2010s.

History

The issue was written by G. Willow Wilson, pencilled and inked by Nico Leon, colored by Ian Herring, and lettered by Joe Caramagna, with editors Sana Amanat and Mark Basso, under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. It falls within the 'Something New' story arc and carries a cover date of June 2018, with a street date of April 18, 2018. The cover — credited to Valerio Schiti and Rachelle Rosenberg — is a homage to classic Archie Comics imagery, part of a wave of Archie-homage variant covers Marvel produced during this period. Wilson's tenure on the Kamala Khan title ran for more than 50 issues across both the Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 numbering, and #29 sits near the conclusion of that historic run before Saladin Ahmed took over with the relaunched Magnificent Ms. Marvel.
