When seventeen-year-old Patti Robinson arrives at the Catskills resort for another family summer, she's certain she's finally grown up—only to have her hopes for romance dampened by her well-meaning but protective parents. Dana Andrews trades his gas pump for Hollywood dreams when his boss Mr. Wardlow and a friend offer him fifty dollars a week to chase his shot at stardom, provided he proves himself at the Pasadena Playhouse. Along the way he meets fellow student Mary Todd, lands a screen test, and secures a studio contract—but discovers a "no-marriage" clause stands between him and the girl he wants to marry. Through small roles, persistence, and a little studio patience, Dana works his way toward becoming the star he set out to be.

When down-on-his-luck promoter Jeff Clayton spots his old wartime pal Tommy Tompkins—newly crowned Mr. Universe and built like the world's most perfect man—he sees dollar signs and a wrestling gold mine. But before Jeff can get Tommy into the ring, a stolen pair of pants lands them both in jail, where wrestling promoter Joe Pulaski bails out Tommy with his own designs in mind. Now Jeff must convince both Tommy and his sweetheart Lorraine that this wrestling scheme is the break they've all been waiting for—if he can keep his star attraction from learning the truth about the sport.
