In small-town Kansas, grocery clerk Merton Gill is obsessed with motion pictures and dreams of becoming a great actor—so much so that his boss Mr. Gashwiler thinks he's lost his mind. When a stranded Hollywood actor named Lawrence Rupert stumbles into town, Merton seizes the chance to audition, but a case of mistaken identity and mistaken intentions sends him fleeing to California with nothing but his dreams and a fake name. Once in Hollywood, the hapless would-be star must navigate the film industry's cold realities while trying to reconnect with Rupert and prove himself worthy of the silver screen.
Director Ivan Porkenuff sets out to film a horror movie at a haunted house with his stars Cathy Poodle and Rex Collie, but trouble arrives when Rinaldo Rat—an old acquaintance with mischief on his mind—shows up with a mechanical monster of his own creation. As the film shoot descends into chaos, Rex and Rinaldo find themselves at odds over Cathy while their creations wreak havoc on the set.
