This April 1986 installment of Marvel/Epic's "fairy tale for grown-ups" carries a Ray Bradbury endorsement right on its cover — "Beautiful, original, haunting" — and Jon J. Muth's watercolor art makes that praise feel entirely earned. The cover presents a weathered, white-bearded elder rendered in luminous, atmospheric washes against a cracked, storm-lit sky, while a glowing-eyed black cat peers down from the upper panel with quiet, unsettling presence. J. M. DeMatteis and Muth's collaboration on "Counterpane" continues to look like nothing else on the 1986 comics rack.
