About this Issue

Moon Knight #16 (vol. 9, October 2022) delivers the first appearance of Lady Yulan — an ancient, fiercely self-possessed vampire warlord whose introduction materially expands the supernatural underworld of New York City as constructed by writer Jed MacKay across his celebrated run. Her debut reframes the ongoing vampire-war arc by revealing a cold-war détente between rival factions predating even the series' chief antagonist, The Tutor, and his 'Structure.' The issue simultaneously marks the apparent death of Hunter's Moon, a status-quo shock whose consequences rippled through subsequent installments and underscored MacKay's willingness to make meaningful, lasting narrative choices within a mainstream superhero book. Together, these developments cemented this chapter as a pivot point — the moment the run's sprawling vampire-politics scaffolding hardened into genuine dramatic stakes.

History

Moon Knight vol. 9 launched in July 2021, with writer Jed MacKay and artist Alessandro Cappuccio forming a creative partnership under editor Tom Brevoort that grew directly out of Jason Aaron's 'Age of Khonshu' Avengers storyline. For Cappuccio — a self-described admirer of the Warren Ellis/Declan Shalvey 2014 run, which he studied while training as an artist — this was his first ongoing assignment at Marvel, and he has described the editorial environment Brevoort assembled as essential to the book's consistency. By the time issue #16 arrived in mid-run, the creative team had built enough structural mythology around the Midnight Mission and its vampire antagonists that a diplomacy-heavy, exposition-forward chapter could carry substantial weight, with Cappuccio and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg's complementary noir and cyberpunk palettes doing much of the dramatic heavy-lifting.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Lady Yulan, the ancient vampire warlord and leader of Clan Yulan, who controls Chinatown's vampire territory and is depicted as an equal — and physical match — for Marc Spector.
  • First appearance (unnamed) of Clan Yulan, a vampire faction predating The Tutor's 'Structure' and existing in a cold-war stalemate with it throughout New York City.
  • Hunter's Moon (Dr. Yehya Badr), the fellow Fist of Khonshu introduced earlier in MacKay's run, suffers an apparent death at the hands of the Tutor's assassins Nemean and Grand Mal in the issue's concurrent B-plot — a cliffhanger that shaped the arc's remaining issues.
  • Written by Jed MacKay with art and inks by Alessandro Cappuccio, colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, letters by VC's Cory Petit, and cover art by Stephen Segovia.
  • Edited by Tom Brevoort (with Martin Biro and Annalise Bissa as associate/assistant editors); published October 19, 2022 with a December 2022 cover date under the Marvel T+ rating.
  • Two variant covers accompanied the standard Segovia cover: a Joshua Cassara variant and a NetEase Games Marvel Duel variant.
  • The issue carries legacy number #216 in the Moon Knight series' continuous numbering, situating it within the ninth volume of the character's solo history.
  • Issue #16 was subsequently collected as part of the larger MacKay–Cappuccio omnibus (Moon Knight by Jed MacKay Omnibus), which gathers all 30 issues of the 2021 series along with supplemental material.
