Monte Hale is falsely branded a thief when the outlaw Red Jack robs a payroll in Adobe City, prompting the townsfolk to pursue him. Monte encounters Johnny Deuces riding an exceptional outlaw stallion and, learning the horse's identity, pursues both the animal and Jack. The story shifts to a tribal setting where Monte participates in an ordeal of battle with a young brave seeking to marry a chief's daughter, ultimately winning through the "Laughing Face" test. Monte is then accused of poisoning his opponent, but the chief's daughter reveals that Running Water was already poisoned, clearing Monte's name and allowing him to restore his honor.
