Modern Comics #85 puts Blackhawk right in the thick of it — his hawk-emblemed blue uniform unmistakable as he takes aim with a rifle from behind rocky desert cover while a mounted charge of colorfully robed riders thunders across the sun-baked landscape behind him. Reed Crandall's cover art captures the sweeping scale of the desert skirmish beautifully, with a machine gun and scattered ammunition adding to the sense of an all-out battle. The cover's promise of Blackhawk "battling evil in the blazing fury of the desert" is delivered with real energy in this 1949 Quality Comics entry.
