Minor Arcana #3

Studios — making it the pivot issue on which the entire multi-arc, tarot-structured saga turns. Within three issues Lemire had built enough world that the series earned a 2025 Eisner Award nomination for Best New Series, measuring it against blockbusters like Absolute Batman and The Power Fantasy. The issue is also the introduction of a second traveler into the series' supernatural 'Unseen World,' a narrative beat that set the template for the ensemble of psychic characters who would populate subsequent arcs. As the formal endpoint of the first collected volume, it is the last chapter new readers encounter before the story expands outward into the 'Book of Swords' and beyond.

Jeff Lemire pitched Minor Arcana as a multi-year project that he had already plotted through at least 22 issues before the first issue shipped, describing it publicly as his 'love letter to the classic Vertigo comics' of his youth — the spiritual counterpart to how Black Hammer served as his tribute to superhero comics. The series marked Lemire's debut as a creator-owned ongoing artist-writer at BOOM! Studios, with editor Eric Harburn shepherding the book and Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon championing it editorially. Each arc was conceived to mirror one suit of a tarot deck, with #3 concluding 'Wands' and setting up the structural model that the rest of the series follows. BOOM! distributed an ashcan preview of the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 before the September launch, and issue #1 sold out and went to a second printing before #3 arrived.
