About this Collection

Minor Arcana #1 marks Jeff Lemire's first creator-owned ongoing series at BOOM! Studios and, by every account, his first solely self-authored ongoing series since Sweet Tooth — making it a genuine career milestone for one of the most prolific cartoonists of his generation. The issue introduces protagonist Theresa St. Pierre and her hometown of Limberlost, establishing a tarot-structured supernatural narrative conceived from the start as a multi-arc, 22-issue run — an ambitious commitment to the ongoing-series format that Lemire himself identified as a deliberate creative stand against the industry's drift toward short-form limited series. The book drew immediate comparison to the landmark Vertigo titles of the 1990s, with Lemire framing it explicitly as his love letter to that 'first wave' of Vertigo comics, situating the series in a direct creative lineage with Sandman, Hellblazer, and House of Secrets. Selling out its first print run at the distributor level and earning a second printing within weeks of launch, it became one of BOOM! Studios' most talked-about debut issues of the decade.

History

The concept for Minor Arcana grew out of Lemire's work on the Essex County television production in Canada circa 2021–2022; he originally envisioned it as a project he would write for another artist, but his deepening connection to the characters and world led him to decide to write, draw, and color the series himself. The timing of the project's development coincided with the expiration of Lemire's Image Comics exclusive arrangement, and his reconnection with BOOM! Studios editor Eric Harburn and Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon — collaborators he had long wanted to work with — sealed the publisher choice. Before the September 4, 2024 comic-shop launch, BOOM! previewed the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 via a limited ashcan edition featuring an exclusive tarot-card variant cover by Lemire with rounded corners physically designed to mimic a tarot card; that ashcan sold out on the convention floor.
