Mighty Samson #2
This second archival volume of Mighty Samson collects issues #5–8 of the 2010 Dark Horse series, continuing the post-apocalyptic adventures of the super-strong Samson and his companions as they navigate the radioactive ruins of a future New York. Written by Jim Shooter with art by Patrick Olliffe and others, this edition reprints the classic Gold Key character's modern revival in a hardcover format.
In "The World of Darkness [Part 1]," Samson and his friends find themselves caught in a sudden collapse of the surface world, swallowed by sinkholes that expose a hidden realm beneath. There, they confront the pale, secretive Undermen—dwellers of the deep who have long watched the surface in silence—only to be interrupted by a terrifying, ever-shifting creature that moves like liquid shadow through the tunnels.
In "[The World of Darkness, Part 2] The Enemy Below," Samson and his allies face a terrifying underground threat as they uncover the source of the giant mole monsters' relentless advance. With the help of the wary Undermen, they track the creatures to their hidden lair, only to stumble upon a dormant atomic bomb that reactivates the moment Samson moves it. Now racing against time, Samson and Mikki must risk everything to deliver the bomb to the heart of the enemy's nest—before the explosion becomes unstoppable.
In "The Migration Mystery [Part 1]," Samson and a group of travelers find themselves driven by an unrelenting compulsion to journey north, through freezing wilderness and dwindling supplies, their only hope to survive the trek. As they push deeper into the Arctic, the mystery deepens when they finally reach a colossal rock floating in the polar sea—the Mental North Pole of Earth—its origins tied to a forgotten atomic war and a strange, lingering telepathic presence.
In "[The Migration Mystery, Part 2] The Mental Battle," Mindor races against time to break the stone’s hold on his people, rallying his allies to craft gunpowder in a desperate bid to destroy it. As danger mounts and the jungle’s grip tightens, Samson faces his greatest trial yet—sinking the stone and unleashing the blast that could free them all.
In "The Renegade Robot [Part 1]," Samson, Mindor, and Jo find themselves stranded in the ruins of Washington, D.C., after a mysterious automated subway delivers them from N'Yark. As they navigate the overgrown cityscape, they're suddenly ambushed by a Presidential-protection robot—now twisted in service to Queen Terra.
In "[The Renegade Robot, Part 2] The Metal Hercules," Samson faces off against Terra’s towering mechanical adversary in the scorched ruins of Washington, D.C., where shattered monuments and twisted steel mark the battlefield. As the clash unfolds among the city’s broken landmarks, Samson must outmaneuver the relentless robot before it brings the last remnants of the capital to its knees.
In "Net-Casting Spider Monster," a colossal arachnid from Mighty Samson’s era unleashes its deadly web-spinning prowess, weaving a trap that ensnares those who cross its path. The story unfolds with a chilling focus on the creature’s eerie, methodical hunt—no heroes, no escapes, just the slow, inevitable pull of the web.
In "Terror in Tallplace Town!, Part 1," Samson faces a new threat when a displaced refugee tribe emerges from a tunnel beneath N'Yark, fleeing invaders from Staten Island. After repelling the group, he’s struck by their desperation—women and children among them—and chooses compassion over force. With Mindor uncovering the Staten Island Ferry, the survivors prepare to journey beyond the city, only to find that Killer Kull, now crowned "King Kull," has seized control of the towering ruins of Tallplace Town. When Kull’s forces attack Samson, they retreat in fear, leaving the hero to confront a rising menace in the sky-high ruins—how to stop a king who rules from above?
In "[Terror in Tallplace Town!, Part 2] King for a Day," Samson races through the treetops to confront the tyrannical King Kull, only to face off against a monstrous Gorillasaur. With Kull's forces capturing Sharmaine and Mindor, Samson must survive a deadly fall into the jungle and outmaneuver his foe before the tyrant claims total control.
In "The Swap Rats [Part 1]," Samson and Mindor find themselves caught in the deadly politics of N'Yark, where traders profit from the perils of the wild. When their objections to the exorbitant prices spark tension, Hulko’s response turns deadly—pushing Samson to the edge of survival.
In "[The Swap Rats, Part 2] Terror on the Tradeway," Samson and his companions face new dangers as the newly reopened N'Yark Tradeway becomes a battleground of greed and survival. With the promise of fair trade between farmers and city-dwellers now under threat, the fragile peace of the Tradeway hangs in the balance.
In "The River Raiders, Part 1," Samson and his friends venture into the derelict ships of the harbor, only to be captured by the wary tribes who call them home. When Mindor proves he can restore the ships’ power, the tribesmen begin to trust them—until Terra of Jerz arrives, commandeering an old Coast Guard cutter and taking Sharmaine hostage. With the city’s waters teeming with rival factions, her plan to dominate the tribes by circling Manhattan begins in earnest.
In "[The River Raiders, Part 2] The Battle of N'Yark Bay," Mighty Samson pushes her battered cutter to the limit, using a salvaged anchor and chain to cripple Terra’s raiding vessel. With the enemy ship disabled and her own craft damaged, she limps toward home, leaving the shelling campaign in ruins.
In "The Prophet of Zomzu, Part 1," the High Priest Merlyn the Magic Maker wields ancient technology in the city of N'Yark to claim leadership over his people, turning their faith into a weapon. When Mindor challenges him with his own brand of mysticism—fueled by the power of Mighty Samson—the line between illusion and truth begins to blur.
In "Menace from Nowhere [Part 1]," Samson and his friends trace a devastating oil spill from N'Yark harbor back through the Gulf Stream, racing to stop the source before it wipes out the local ecosystem. When they reach Florida, their efforts lead to a tense confrontation with the very people they’re trying to save.
In "[Menace from Nowhere Part 2] Between Beasts and Machines," Mindor tries to calm a wary tribe by convincing them he can disable the nearby automated factories threatening their way of life. As distrust flares and the situation grows tense, he and Samson must work together to find a way through the chaos—before fear turns deadly. With the tribe’s fate hanging in the balance, the journey to N’Yark begins on uncertain ground.
