Vertigo's supernatural series Midnight, Mass. continues with this 2002 second issue, written by John Rozum with interior art by Jesús Saiz and inks by Jimmy Palmiotti. Tomer Hanuka's cover is immediately arresting — a wide, amber-hued field strewn with bodies where a ghoulish figure in a law enforcement uniform looms over the fallen, a visibly shaken woman clutches a dark cloak in the foreground, and a lone silhouetted figure approaches ominously in the background against a farmhouse. The unsettling rural dread on display makes "The Edge of Civilization: Part One" a compelling entry point into whatever darkness this series has in store.
