“Will the Real Metamorpho Please Stand Up?”

The cover of Metamorpho: The Element Man #5 asks a delightfully baffling question — "Will the Real Metamorpho Please Stand Up?" — as a bewildered man in a blue suit throws up his hands, surrounded by two melting, skull-faced Metamorpho figures dissolving into heaps of elemental goop on either side of him. Above, two full-bodied versions of the Element Man race toward each other for a collision punctuated by a bold "WHOOMP," teasing that one of these bizarre duplicates is a super-villain in disguise. Cover art by Joe Orlando and Charles Paris gives the whole scene a wonderfully offbeat Silver Age energy that captures exactly why Bob Haney's run on this title was such a quirky treat in 1966.
