In this quietly magical 1998 issue of Mermaid, writer and artist James Kochalka crafts a gentle, dreamlike story as Elf, Mommy, Kitty, and Dave the Robot journey to Monhegan Island. As the legend of mermaids lingers in the air, a rainy night brings unexpected tides—when Dave the Robot vanishes into the ocean, a simple stone thrown in search of him sets off a quiet, mysterious chain of events. The cover by James Kochalka captures the moment the mermaid’s tail slips beneath the waves, leaving only the echo of a splash and a stone returned to shore.

Elf and Mommy take a trip to Monhegan Island in Maine, bringing Kitty and Dave the Robot with them. Elf tells them about the legend of mermaids. They all walk on the beach. That night Kitty and Dave the Robot go out for a walk, it starts raining, and Dave the Robot falls into the ocean. The next day while looking for Dave, Elf throws a rock into the ocean. Dave sees it, and then walks out onto the beach. As they leave, the Mermaid (whom nobody has seen) throws the rock back onto the beach, hitting Elf on the back of his head. Dave turns in time to see her tail splash as she disappears.
