“Toymaster of Crime”

In "Toymaster of Crime," Will Eisner delivers a taut, atmospheric tale as the enigmatic Black Ace is drawn into a dangerous mission aboard a mysterious submarine. With Eisner’s signature storytelling and artistry on full display, the story unfolds in tense silence and shadow, as Black Ace faces both the depths and the moral weight of his assignment. The cover by Mac Raboy captures the issue’s eerie, noir-tinged mood, a striking complement to the tale within.

Black Ace gets himself recruited for a shady job on a submarine, which, he later discovers, involves sinking American tankers. When the sub surfaces it is torpedoed and sinks to the bottom. Black Ace keeps up the morale of the crew, having them breathe shallowly, until a rescue crew arrives.
