Master Comics #44

There's something wonderfully unexpected about Master Comics #44 (November 1943) — Captain Marvel Jr., rendered in Mac Raboy's distinctively elegant linework, stands grinning in his purple-and-gold costume before a towering crystal city, facing down a very earnest penguin while more of the tuxedoed birds cluster in the background. The cover promises exactly what it says: "The Crystal City of the Peculiar Penguins," and Raboy's dreamy, almost Art Deco architecture glowing beneath a starburst light makes the whole scene feel genuinely otherworldly. For a dime, this 1943 Fawcett publication delivers one of the more charmingly surreal superhero covers of its era.
