First appearance of the Champion of the Universe (Tryco Slatterus), an Elder of the Universe created by writer Tom DeFalco and penciler Ron Wilson.
Final issue of the Marvel Two-in-One Annual series.
Story title: 'And They Shall Call Him… Champion!' Published with an October 1982 cover date; on-sale date June 22, 1982.
The Champion's Promoter Supreme Proja conscripts eight heroes — Thing, Thor, Hulk, Namor, Colossus, Sasquatch, Doc Samson, and Wonder Man — into a boxing match set at Madison Square Garden, with Earth threatened with destruction if they refuse.
Most heroes are eliminated before or during the bouts: Namor refuses to train and is disqualified, Doc Samson is deemed insufficiently skilled, Thor is disqualified for using Mjolnir, Hulk is expelled as a 'mindless brute,' Wonder Man is disqualified for destroying the ring, and Sasquatch and Colossus are knocked out. Only the Thing survives all three rounds.
Vision and Scarlet Witch appear briefly but the Champion disqualifies Vision on the grounds that he is not human; Cyclops and Wolverine appear as audience members and attempt to intervene but are rebuffed.
The Champion concedes that the Thing — though technically losing on points — is the first opponent to truly challenge him (reportedly breaking the Champion's ribs), and he spares Earth rather than destroy it.
The story was reprinted in Essential Marvel Two-in-One #4 (2011, black and white) and was homaged in the Dexter's Laboratory animated short 'Dial M for Monkey — Wrasslor.' The Champion later went on to appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series (2015) and the video game Marvel Contest of Champions.
