“Foiled!”

In "Foiled!", Spider-Man and Captain Marvel team up to stop an aging inventor whose desperate attempt to solve overpopulation by teleporting entire cities to another dimension goes dangerously awry. With the machine's power threatening to unravel reality, the duo must outthink the device before it's too late—though not without consequence, as the strange energy surge leaves Captain Marvel, Monica, permanently trapped in her intangible form. Written by Dave Michelinie and illustrated by Greg LaRocque with inks by Mike Esposito, this 1984 issue features a striking cover by Ed Hannigan and Bob Wiacek.

Spider-Man and Captain Marvel hook up to take on a well intentioned but misguided old man who has created a machine to fix earth's overpopulation problem by sending the world's largest cities to another dimension. They are able to turn the power of the machine on itself and make it disappear but something about its power signature has caused Monica to be stuck permanently in her energy form.
