“Captain America Must Die!”

In "Captain America Must Die!", the Red Skull unveils a shocking twist: Sam Wilson, the Falcon, is actually a former criminal named "Snap" Wilson, manipulated into a new identity using the Cosmic Cube. With a secret link to his bird companion Redwing and a mind controlled by the villain, Wilson becomes the ultimate weapon in a deadly scheme to destroy Captain America. Written by Steve Englehart and John Warner, with dynamic art by Frank Robbins and inks by Mike Esposito and Frank Giacoia, this pivotal issue sees Gabe Jones and Peggy Carter racing to summon S.H.I.E.L.D. to stop the Red Skull’s plan. The cover, a striking collaboration by Gil Kane, Frank Giacoia, and John Romita with inks by Joe Sinnott and Frank Giacoia, captures the tension of the moment.

The Red Skull reveals that Sam Wilson was, in reality, a criminal named "Snap" Wilson. Wilson crashed on the Island of Exiles while attempting to steal a planeload of contraband from his boss. Seeing an opportunity to defeat Captain America using a sleeper agent, the Red Skull used the Cosmic Cube to give Wilson a new personality, a new set of memories, and a superhuman link with Redwing. The Red Skull attempt to use the mind-controlled Falcon to kill Captain America, but Gabe Jones and Peggy Carter manage to call in S.H.I.E.L.D. reinforcements to attack the Red Skull's headquarters.
