In the quiet of the night, a beaver silently works to build a dam and construct a safe, underwater home. Using sticks, mud, and stones, he prepares his lodge and stores food for the winter, ensuring shelter and sustenance when the pond freezes.

When a wildfire breaks out near Porcupine Creek, Mark Trail and a young boy named Andy race to find two missing boys, Scotty and Freddie, who are trapped by the spreading flames. As the boys struggle to survive, Andy uses his training to help carry water, playing a crucial role in rescuing them from a burning mine shaft.

Freddie Jackson and his pet beaver, Flapper, face growing tension on their farm after the beaver damages apple trees, prompting Freddie’s father to threaten getting rid of him. When a flash flood threatens to destroy their home, Flapper’s dam unexpectedly redirects the floodwaters, saving the farm—and proving his worth just as Freddie pleads to keep him.

Mark Trail's Sketch Book follows the early life of cougar kittens as they grow from helpless newborns in a hidden cave to adventurous young hunters, learning survival skills from their mother in the rugged mountains. As they explore their world, test their strength, and begin to master the art of the hunt, they face the challenges of growing up in the wild. The story captures their journey from timid cubs to independent young adults, shaped by instinct and the lessons of nature.

Young Freddie Jackson stumbles upon a baby cougar in the forest and befriends it, only to be confronted by the cub’s mother and later punished by his uncle for claiming the encounter. After being disbelieved and sent to his room, Freddie runs off into the woods, where he becomes lost and soon realizes he’s not alone—his newfound feline friend is with him, and danger may be closer than he thinks.

Freddie and his dog Fuzzy venture into the woods when a grizzly bear suddenly appears, forcing the boy to flee. As the bear charges, a lioness intervenes, and the young cougar escapes, leaving the bear to face the boy’s uncle, who arrives just in time. The story explores the grizzly’s rare but fierce nature, showing how even a creature usually seeking solitude can be provoked into action.
