The Marc Spector: Moon Knight ongoing series launched in 1989 under writer Chuck Dixon, who steered the book through its first 24 issues before departing and leaving several storylines unresolved. Issue #22, released on-sale November 27, 1990 with a cover date of January 1991, falls squarely in the heart of Dixon's tenure, during which Denys Cowan served as cover artist, lending the book a gritty, kinetic visual identity. Dixon's Secret Empire arc — the connective tissue running through this period — was ambitious enough in scope that its threads had to be picked up by Al Milgrom in Amazing Spider-Man #353–358 after Dixon's exit.
