An orphan named Patience leaves her orphanage and travels to New York City where she is befriended by a runaway named Rowan. She is followed to New York by Kristof, a shepherd in the Order of Malta. He tells Patience that she is a descendant of Mary Magdalene and has been trained to take up the mantle of the Magdalena in order to protect humanity from supernatural menaces. While Patience comes to grips with this information, her friend Rowan is kidnapped. Kristof and Patience make a deal: if she follows him to Malta, he will help her rescue her friend.
